Kabul: A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck Turkey’s northwestern Duzce province, with tremors felt in Istanbul city, capital Ankara and other regions, officials said.
The earthquake, which struck at 4:08 am [local time] on Wednesday, was centered about 14 kilometres northwest of Duzce, in the Golyaka district, Turkey’s disaster management agency, AFAD said.
It said 35 people were injured, one of them critically, and reported 70 aftershocks in the region.
The quake woke people from their sleep and many rushed out of buildings in panic in the province that has experienced earthquakes in the past. Power in the region was cut.
AFAD said electricity in Duzce province was snapped as a precautionary measure.
Duzce Governor Cevdet Atay announced that schools will be closed on Wednesday. Sakarya and Bolu provinces also made similar announcements.
A magnitude-6.8 quake hit Elazig in January 2020, killing more than 40 people.
Türkiye sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes.
In 1999 a magnitude 7.4 earthquake, which lasted less than a minute, struck the Anatolian fault system with the epicentre at about 7 miles southeast of Izmit. It was the most damaging earthquake in Turkey, causing the death of 17,000 people and leaving more than 250,000 people homeless.
