Martyrs’ Week: Families commemorate those fallen in defense of homeland

By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: Family members, friends and relatives of the men fighting against the then Soviet Union and the insurgents to defend Afghanistan gathered at the National Gallery here to commemorate the “Martyrs’ Week” and remember the lost loved ones.

Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC), relatives and friends of the killed people, civil society activists and representatives of the political parties organized a ceremony on Sunday in this regard.

In the commemoration ceremony, pictures of the martyrs were displayed and the memories were recalled.

Deputy Minister of Information, Muzhgan Mustafawi, said that marking “Martyrs Week” is an opportunity to remember the national heroes and renew the pledges to protect the country at any cost.

She said that the pages of the country’s contemporary history are inscribed with the glorious and heroic struggle of our heroes in defending the country’s freedom and in this course the role of national heroes like Ahmad Shah Massoud and thousands unknown martyrs is distinguished and significant.

“Our hero nation still gives sacrifices to safeguard its freedom. Still the injured enemy is waiting to ambush and has been conspiring to hit sword from backside. The information ministry is requesting all print and electronic media outlets to respect the sacrifices of the martyrs, honor Martyrs’ Week and adjust their programs in accordance with the dignity of Hafta-e-Shahid,” she requested.

Mohammad Musa Friwar, an activist, said that martyrs are the shining torch of history who laid down their lives for the country.

He pointed out that some opportunists misuse the names and pictures of famous martyrs and gain profit and threat poor people on the streets.

“Those who exploited the name and pictures of the martyrs to usurp state-owned lands and get power are traitors,” he said.

Families of the martyrs claimed that their sons and husbands lost their lives to defend the country but the government does not pay attention to support them.

In May 2012, the National Assembly of Afghanistan have accepted September 9th as a new national holiday to honor Ahmad Shah Massoud and those who died fighting for the country.
