AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Terming the endemic corruption as the hurdle for development in different sectors, the president’s special representative for reforms and good governance, Ahmad Zia Massoud, on Wednesday said that a revision of the Constitution was required to overcome the problem in Afghanistan.
He told a conference in Kabul that Afghanistan made major achievements in several fields in past 13 years but the government failed to overcome endemic corruption, therefore some amendment in the Constitution were needed to curb the challenge.
He stressed on the need for a strong will to overcome the menace, and said that there would be no corruption in public offices if main state institutions and civil society organizations are strengthened and supported.
He said that a new mechanism would be introduced for appointment of government officials on merit basis and removing the departments that hold same responsibilities.
He vowed that the government would leave no stone unturned to improve good governance all over the country.
The head of Afghans Coordination for Fighting Corruption Institute, Baaryalai Omarzai, suggested that concrete measures should be taken to overcome corruption in state offices.
He said that corruption and terrorism were the biggest hurdles for the Afghan government therefore the government should identify and trial corrupt officials.
