KABUL: Commander of the U.S. Central Command, Kenneth McKenzie asserted responsibility for the airstrike carried out by the U.S. Air Force in late August in capital Kabul, killing 10 civilians including children.

 “As the combatant commander, I am fully responsible for this strike and its tragic outcome,” McKenzie told reporters.

CENTCOM commander said that the target was believed to be the militants trying to attack U.S. forces and Afghans waiting at the gates of Kabul Airport. “This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake,” he added.

Pentagon earlier claimed that Daesh suicide bombers were targeted in the airstrike days after Daesh suicide bombers attacked Kabul airport and killed around 170 people.

The irresponsible and improper evacuation of the U.S. led mission from Kabul airport triggered severe chaos at the Kabul-Hamid Karzai International Airport.
