AT-KABUL: In the aftermath of the Taliban’s threat to two private TV channels, Afghan media warned to boycott the Taliban’s news, if the group harmed journalists and media organizations.
The Taliban militants labeled Tolo TV and 1TV as ‘propaganda networks’. They declared the television networks and their staffers as legitimate targets.
Afghan journalists said that such threats will not deter them from their duty to provide people with accurate and unbiased information.
Executive chief of the Afghanistan’s journalists union, Fahim Dashti, said that the threat is not limited to the two television networks, but is considered a threat to all Afghan journalists and freedom of press.
He stressed that media will not bow down to such threats.
While reading the resolution of Afghan media, a member of the Afghanistan Journalists’ Federation Zia Bomiya said that attack on media organizations will be considered as war crime. He warned that Afghan media will boycott the Taliban’s news, if the militant group harmed journalists and media organizations.
The media-men called on the government to lend its full support to media. “Ensuring safety of media should be on the top priority of the government,” they said.
The Presidential Palace also condemned the Taliban’s threat to media outlets and reaffirmed the government’s support to free media. Terming media as one of the important pillars of democracy, the statement said that the government will spare no efforts to ensure safety of media organizations and journalists.
