KABUL – At least four Pakistani paramilitary troops were killed and seven others injured in a Taliban attack on a security checkpoint in the northwestern Kurram district, a police official confirmed on Sunday. The attack, carried out by heavily armed militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, highlights the escalating violence in the region bordering Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the assault. The group, which has intensified its attacks since the Afghan Taliban regained power in Kabul in 2021, regularly targets Pakistani security forces. Islamabad accuses the Afghan Taliban of harboring TTP militants, a charge Kabul denies.
The attack follows a deadly suicide bombing last week in Bannu district, where 13 civilians and five soldiers were killed. Last year, Pakistan experienced its deadliest year in a decade, with over 1,600 fatalities due to militant violence, according to the Center for Research and Security Studies.
The surge in attacks underscores the growing security challenges for Pakistan, which continues to grapple with militant threats along its volatile border with Afghanistan.
