Military operations underway in ten provinces

AT-KABUL: The national army is launching operations in 10 provinces including Farah, Ghazni and Uruzgan, the most insecure ones in the recent days.

The ministry said the aim of the operations were to return security to Farah city, KhasUruzgan district of Uruzgan and districts under threat in Ghazni provinces.

“The ongoing operations are launched in Badghis, Jawzjan, Kunduz, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Ghazni, Helmand and Farah provinces,” said the ministry spokesman, Mohammad Radmanesh. “36 insurgents have been killed during the past 24 hours,” Radmanesh said Saturday. He added that two soldiers were injured.

Some officials in the mentioned provinces, however, said that 14 soldiers were killed during their operations.

Ramazan Ali Mohseni, Ghazni’s deputy provincial police chief said that nine soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on their checkpoint in the Ajrestan district.

Zia Dorrani, police spokesman in Kandahar province said that five police were killed and six more injured in the Taliban’s attack in the Maroof district. 12 Taliban militants were also killed, according to Dorrani, who added that 18 militants were wounded.

Increasing attacks in Uruzgan province have made Kandahar people worried about their security in the past.

The KhasUruzgan district has been reportedly fallen to Taliban, but government officials rejects the reports, saying that the district was under control of security forces.

“KhasUruzgan is under the government control and threats have decreased. Troops in the Chora, Dehrawood and parts of Tarinkot city (provincial capital) have been armed and equipped.

Taliban fighters captured the Farah city Tuesday night in multiple attacks, but security forces recaptured the city the next day.

Defense ministry spokesman said that the security belt around the city was reestablished, after Taliban removed them.

He added that security forces were engaged in clearance operations inside the city.

The Tala wa Barfak district in the northern province of Baghlan previously fallen to Taliban, was freed by security forces again, according to Radmanesh.
