KABUL: The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said it was investigating a video that went viral on social media that showed men in the Afghan National Army (ANA) uniform mutilating bodies that appear to be Taliban fighters.
A statement from the ministry said it was “seriously investigating this issue and if verified that the violators are members of ANA, they will be dealt with according to the applicable laws of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.”
It’s not confirmed where and when the footage occurred but one man filming the mutilation scene says “they had come to fight in Arghandab — this is their Red Unit,” referring to the Taliban’s elite force.
The footage shows the 15 men, speaking in Dari and Pashto, in uniforms smashing the heads of four corpses with hatchets.
Qari Mohammad Yousuf Ahmad, a Taliban spokesman, has dubbed the incident ‘barbaric’ in a statement. He asked the international human rights institutions to probe the video.
It also confirmed that the bodies of their fighters were mutilated in the Arghandab district of Zabul Province
