AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend unveiling ceremony of Afghanistan’s new parliament building that India is constructing, said Indian media outlets.
Construction of the new parliament building at the total cost of $200 million is considered as India’s symbolic support for Afghanistan, as the latter is struggling to transition into a stable democracy.
The Ministry of Urban Development Affairs and Indian Embassy in Afghanistan said earlier this month that construction of the building will be completed within six months.
Construction of the building is part of India’s $2 billion aid package for Afghanistan.
Construction of the building was started in 2009 by India’s Central Public Works Department and has missed its deadline by three years.
Once completed, the building will be able to withstand terror attacks and earthquakes up to 8 on the Richter scale.
The new building contains separate plenary halls, committee meeting rooms, and administrative offices for both Wolesi Jirga and Meshrano Jirga with total area of 57,000 square meters.
The project also includes construction of a mosque that can accommodate 400 worshipers at a time and a library with capacity of 1,000 books. Construction of 350 apartments is also part of the project.
