KABUL – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on China, Russia, India, Iran, Pakistan, central Asian countries to jointly fight terrorism and help Afghanistan
Modi was hosting the virtual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday as the Eurasian political and security group accepted Iran as a member seeking to expand its regional foothold.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, China’s President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and leaders of four central Asian countries took part in the online proceedings.
In his address, Modi raised concerns about the ongoing situation in Afghanistan and its potential far-reaching consequences for SCO member nations. He stressed the collective responsibility to prioritize the well-being of the Afghan people and urged SCO member states to prevent the exploitation of Afghanistan to spread unrest in neighboring countries or promote extremist ideologies.
Modi emphasized that India’s concerns and expectations regarding Afghanistan closely align with those of most SCO members. He highlighted the grave threat terrorism poses to regional and global peace, urging SCO member nations to openly condemn and actively combat this menace.
Following Modi’s remarks, President Xi of China emphasized the importance of pragmatic cooperation and expediting economic recovery.
Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan stated that the international community is at a standstill concerning Afghanistan and highlighted the critical support required by Kabul to prevent a humanitarian crisis, which has been withheld so far.
President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan also directed attentions to Afghanistan, saying, “We must not reduce our attention to the problem of Afghanistan.” “For Kyrgyzstan, as well as for our friends, peace and stability in Afghanistan are priority conditions for ensuring regional security,” he said.
The SCO, consisting of India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, holds significant influence as an economic and security bloc. It has emerged as one of the largest trans-regional international organizations. India assumed the rotating chairmanship of the SCO after the Samarkand Summit on September 16 last year, reaffirming its commitment to the organization’s objectives.
As the SCO members continue their deliberations and discussions, Prime Minister Modi’s call for a unified front against terrorism resonates strongly, highlighting the urgent need for concerted global action to address this critical threat to peace and stability.
