AT-KABUL: Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development said Tuesday it officially began a $1.25 million project to revamp 36 damaged water canals.
“War has decimated the country’s water infrastructure, and water canals have been destroyed, having incapacitated agriculture and economic growth,” said minister of rural rehabilitation and development Mujiburrahman Karimi.
Delivering a speech at inaugural ceremony of a new water canal in Paghman district on Tuesday, he said that 36 percent of Afghanistan’s water canals have been completely destroyed according to a 2004 report.
“Today,one of those projects is being inaugurated in Paghman. This canal has the capacity to irrigate 300 acres of land,” he stated.
He also declared that approximately $12 million had been earmarked this year for projects in Kabul to include irrigation, water reservation, and transportation and protection walls.
“President Ghani has ordered the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and Water and Energy to devise and implement a five-year plan for reconstruction of water canals. That ambitious plan has been devised and a total of 3,400 canals will be re-constructed throughout the country,” he remarked.
Since the President’s directive, the MoRRD has hitherto finished a social and environmental survey of 412 projects as well as technical survey of 60 other schemes, he noted, “And the ministry has signed contracts for rehabilitation of 40 canals, of which reconstruction work has started on 36 projects in Kandahar, Herat, Kabul, Khost, Nangarhar, Logar and Paktia provinces.”
