AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Russian foreign ministry has said that it plans to supply small arms to Afghanistan in near future though it would stop sending other weapons.
The statement comes amid growing insecurity in Afghanistan, which Russian officials believe a major threat to Russia and other former Soviet republics.
“The delivery will be in February and for now, it’s more than sufficient,” Russia’s special envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying on Wednesday.
Facing threats from ISIS, al-Qaida and the Taliban, Kabul has asked Moscow for military support as the United States is downsizing troop presence.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned leaders of Central Asian nations of a possible militants’ incursion from Afghanistan.
He said the situation in Afghanistan is “close to critical” and called on the Central Asian leaders to be prepared to act together to repel a possible attack.
He made the remarks at a summit of former Soviet republics in Kazakhstan in October 2015.
