KABUL: A former Member of Parliament (MP) Obaidullah Barikzai has been gunned down in an attack by unknown people in southern Kandahar province on Saturday, official said.
Barikzai, former MP from Uruzgan province came under gun attack in the 6th police district of Kandahar city at around 3:30pm local time.
Kandahar Police Chief Maj. Gen. Tadin Khan confirmed the incident. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility to the attack by any group so far.
He was district governor in Chora district in Uruzgan province before won a seat in the Wolesi Jirga.
It is worth mentioning that Independent Election Commission, last year in a report said that 10 candidates were killed since parliamentary elections in July 2018. Now with Barikzai’s assassination the casualties count for 11.
Based on TOLONews report, the candidates are Abdul Jabar Qahraman and Saleh Mohammad Achakzai from Helmand province; Nasir Mubarez from the Kochis’ constituency from Kandahar; Anwar Niazi from Parwan; Jalal Salehi from Kabul; Sayed Obaidullah Sadat from Ghazni; Ottar Singh Khalsa a candidate of Afghan Sikh and Hindu from Kabul; Hayatullah Khan Rahmani from Nangarhar, were among the candidates who lost their lives in different incidents in various parts of the country.
