A 5.9-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan left more than 1,300 dead and more than 6,000 injured. Thousands of houses were also completely destroyed or severely damaged. “Spireh” city of Khost and “Gyan” and “Barmel” cities of Paktika suffered the most damage.
“Gaetan Drossart”, the representative of Doctors Without Borders in Afghanistan, explaining the end of the mission of this organization, said: “The decision to close our activities after a few weeks was [made] given the emergency nature of our response and the fact that other organizations were increasing their activities in Bermal. But access to health care in the area needs to be improved in a longer-term, sustainable way.”
