KABUL: A funeral ceremony was held on Wednesday for Hazrat Sebghaullah Mojaddedi, a jihadi leader and the first president in the mujahideen government, in the presidential palace with the participation of President Ashraf Ghani, former President Hamid Karzai, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Vice President Sarwar Danesh, senior government officials, members of parliament and a large number of his family members and followers.
Mojaddedi passed away on Tuesday morning in Kabul after suffering an illness at the age of 93.
President Ghani praised Mojaddedi as a national character, who worked hard to save and develop Afghanistan. “Today is the day that we lost one of the most prominent characters of Afghanistan’s contemporary history. Late Hazrat Saheb (reference to Mojaddedi with respect) had very particular characteristics. All of his consultations were unity, solidarity and coordination,” Ghani addressed the ceremony after the funeral prayers.
He praised Mojaddedi’s efforts in resolving different problems in the country, saying that Afghans were mournful. Ghani said that the national flag was half-hoisted in all government offices and diplomatic agencies in abroad and that Wednesday was declared public holiday.
Late Mojaddedi chaired the Emergency Loya Jirga and served as the head of senate for several years. He was laid to rest in the old part of Kabul city, where he was born.
“Our father Hazrat is no more among us. But he will be alive the hearts of our people and will be remembered for a long time maybe forever,” said his son Najibullah Mojaddedi.
Mojaddedi was born in 1926 in a spiritual family in Kabul city and studied theologies in Egypt.
Government officials and politicians praised his efforts and called his death as a tragedy.
