The police chief for eastern Nangarhar province was killed in an IED blast in the Hesarak district of the province on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Brig. Gen. Zarawar Khan Zahid was killed and one of his bodyguards was injured in the landmine explosion on Sunday afternoon around 5:00pm while was inspecting police check posts in insecure Hesarak district, governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani said in a statement.
Zahid was in Hesarak over the past three days as part of the ongoing operations against militants in the troubled district which was just last month overran by the Taliban for few hours.
Zarawar Zahid had previously served as the police chief for southern Ghazni and Paktika provinces.
This is the third general die in Taliban attacks in a week.
