KABUL: US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalamy Khalilzad during his visit to Kabul in quest of peace, held meetings with Afghan officials, where he insisted over the need of intra-Afghan talks to be revived.
Khalilzad briefed President Ghani and other Afghan government officials, said a statement from Presidential Palace.
He updated the officials on what he will be pursing in his forthcoming visits and endeavors in regards to Afghanistan reconciliation.
“Both sides insisted on reviving the intra-Afghan dialogue, and considered it a prelude to starting direct negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah also said he was pleased to receive Khalilzad and hear about his unrelenting diplomatic efforts toward intra-Afghan dialogue and international cooperation for peace.
“We agree that both national and international consensus is essential for lasting peace,” he tweeted.
Regional and international consensus on peace is already shaping after trilateral meeting between special envoys of United States, Russia and China in Moscow where they reached consensus on the Afghan peace process.
It was the second trilateral consultation on Afghanistan in Moscow, in which US Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad, Chinese Special Envoy Deng Xijun, and Russian Presidential Representative Zamir Kabulov discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and the ongoing peace process, reads a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The three sides respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Afghanistan as well as its right to choose its development path. The three sides prioritize the interests of the Afghan people in promoting a peace process.
The three sides support an inclusive Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process and are ready to provide necessary assistance. The three sides encourage the Afghan Taliban to participate in peace talks with a broad, representative Afghan delegation that includes the government as soon as possible. Toward this end, and as agreed in Moscow in February 2019, we support a second round of intra-Afghan dialogue in Doha (Qatar).
