KABUL: The NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg believes that a “joint work” was needed to resolve challenges in Afghanistan.
In a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Stoltenberg said Saturday that the military organization member states would hold a meeting in February to discuss the future of their presence in the war-hit country.
He expressed support to the ongoing peace effort for Afghanistan, saying that their presence in the country would be discussed.
The NATO chief warned that troop withdrawal from Afghanistan would jeopardize achievements of international struggle against terrorism.
The statement comes after the US reduced its troop level to 2,500 this month and this would go down to zero in May, under a peace deal signed last year between Taliban and the US former president.
Stoltenberg, however, admitted that their continuous presence would be interpreted as an interference in a difficult war.
“We are facing many challenges simultaneously that none of them could be overcome lonely. We need to be together. I don’t trust the US lonely and I don’t trust Europe alone. I trust unity of the US and Europe.” The NATO had earlier warned Trump of endangering all achievements gained in Afghanistan by the pullout of foreign troops.
