AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday told reporters in the Belgian capital that he would follow the security situation in Afghanistan closely. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving the Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz,” he said. While giving assurance to probe the incident completely, he said that security situation in Afghanistan remains challenging, but the Afghan security forces are there to deal with the challenge, and we continue supporting them, he said.
NATO Defense Ministers, scheduled to meet in Brussels on Thursday where they will discuss the level of the troops presence and the Resolute Support Mission.
Stoltenberg added that ministerial meeting would confer on whether or not to reduce the number of military bases in the war-hit country. “The duration of the whole mission, the level of forces, the number of forces and also the regional outreach of the mission is something we are going to assess,” he said.
Responding to a query regarding Kunduz, he said that Afghan security forces were capable of facing threats, and they have the capability to stand and take responsibility for nationwide security after an end to NATO’s combat mission. While lauded the Afghan forces, he said that they have been able to retaken and stand their ground again and again where none thought it would be an easy task for them to recapture Kunduz province.
