KABUL: Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday pledged to complete projects his country has initiated in Afghanistan.
Sharif, who arrived in Kabul at the head of a high-level delegation, held talks with President Ashraf Ghani at the presidential palace.
At the delegation-level meeting, both the sides discussed various issues of mutual interest, including security and economic cooperation, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
Pakistan army chief Gen. Raheel Sharif, who accompanied Nawaz Sharif, said the territories of Pakistan and Afghanistan would be not be used against each other, according Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Asim Bajwa.
In a series of tweets, Bajwa said the army chief also extended full support for Afghan led peace efforts and added that Pak-Afghan relations will strictly adhere to a policy of non-interference.
General Raheel further said that Afghanistan’s enemy will be treated as Pakistan’s enemy and vice versa.
The army chief also directed the Frontier Works Organisation to commence constructions of the Torkham-Jalalabad carriageway. Construction of this project will commence within a week, DG ISPR tweeted.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and top military and civil leaders arrived in Kabul for a day-long visit to discuss with Afghan leaders ways how to step up cooperation against militants on both sides of the border, Pakistani TV reported.
Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and Finance Minister Eklil Ahmad Hakimi received the Pakistani prime minister and his accompanying delegation at the Hamid Karzai International airport. A guard of honour was presented by a contingent of the Afghan army to the premier upon arrival.
The visit follows an invitation from President Ghani. Sharif had previously visited Kabul after the inauguration of the unity government. This is his second visit to Afghanistan.
The Pakistani Embassy in Kabul said the prime minister’s visit would help further strengthen bilateral relations.
