Kabul: Two senior Biden administration national security officials informed NBC News that two American citizens are currently detained in Afghanistan, while the remaining Americans in the country are there voluntarily. “Every American who wanted to leave has left,” stated the first official, emphasizing that no one was left behind. The officials also noted ongoing efforts to evacuate Afghan allies.
The State Department indicated challenges in determining the exact number of U.S. citizens in Afghanistan seeking assistance to leave. A spokesperson highlighted the complexity, stating, “It is impossible to say with certainty how many U.S. citizens are in Afghanistan today,” citing fluctuations over the past 30 months.
According to State Department officials, over 67,000 Afghans have applied for special immigrant visas designed for those who supported the U.S. mission, with at least 20,000 found eligible and progressing through the process.
