KABUL: A group of 40 Taliban militantswere arrested by intelligence operativesin southern Kandahar province,marching thembefore media representatives on Saturday, while seventh round of peace talks between US peace envoy and Taliban members kicked off in Doha of Qatar.
The National Directorate of security (NDS) operatives detained the insurgents in the provincial capital, Kandahar city, and districts, the Governor Hayatullah Hayat told newsmen.
He said the nabbed militants were involved in conducting terrorist and destructive activities across the province and had confessed to their crimes.
According to Hayat, a number of key Taliban leaders were also among the detainees. The Taliban, however, have not yet commented in this regard.
Meanwhile, the U.S. officials and the Taliban launched a seventh round of talks later on Saturday in Doha in efforts to end the 18-year war.
However, conflicts between the Taliban and the Afghan government continue unabated. Reports reveal that 25 public uprising members have been killed in a Taliban ambush in Baghlan province. Elsewhere, at least 20 insurgents were killed in Sorobi district of capital Kabul.
