KABUL: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan has confirmed that the Netherlands recently made a generous contribution of €25 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF), as the nation faces a deepening humanitarian crisis.
Established by OCHA, the AHF aims to address the complexities of emergencies and prioritize projects that cater to the urgent needs of the most vulnerable individuals.
Expressing their ongoing commitment to aiding the people of Afghanistan, the Netherlands has emerged as the largest donor to the AHF for 2023, followed by the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Germany. The announcement was made via a tweet from the UN agency operating in Afghanistan.
With this recent donation, the Netherlands’ total contribution to the AHF since 2016 now stands at €74 million, according to OCHA.
The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has significantly deteriorated following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. Presently, over two-thirds of the population, approximately 28.8 million people, are in desperate need of immediate humanitarian assistance.
To address this pressing crisis, OCHA has launched an appeal to the international community, requesting a total of $3.2 billion in assistance. However, the agency has only received $463.2 million thus far, leaving a substantial funding gap of $2.8 billion.
