KABUL: The government has appointed Ghulam Jilani Popal as the Independent Directorate of Local government (IDLG) chief and new governors for western Herat and southern Kandahar provinces, an official said on Monday.
The government official told Pajhwok Afghan News Dr. Humayun Azizi had been appointed as new governor for Kandahar and Mohammad Asif Rahimi as new governor for Herat.
But Tawab Ghorzang, the IDLG spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had not received as yet any official notification about the appointments.
Popal, who belongs to Qarah Bagh district of Kabul province, had worked with an Afghan refugees programme during his migration to Pakistan. Also serving with the United Nations, Popal was appointed as deputy finance minister after the fall of Taliban regime.
He had previously performed as IDLG director until he resigned in 2009. He was nominated as finance minister-designate but he stepped aside citing personal reasons.
Mohammad Asif Rahimi, the newly-appointed governor of Herat, is a resident of Paghman district of Kabul province.
Rahimi studied in Habibia High School in Kabul, has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Kabul University and then pursued higher studies in the United stated.
During President Karzai’s tenure, Rahimi, a former agriculture minister, had worked as deputy and then head of the Rural Rehabilitation and Development.
Dr. Humayun Azizi, who has been named as Kandahar governor, belongs to Herat province and has graduated from the Amani High School in Kabul.
With a medical degree from the Kabul Medical University, Azizi possess Master of Public Health (MPh) degree from France.
Azizi had served as Parliamentary Affairs Minister in 2010. He is fluent in Pashto, Dari, English and French languages. (PAN)
