KABUL: A new unit of the Afghan National Army with enhancive-military equipment and high capacity would be established to suppress the militants, a top military official said on Tuesday.
Acting Minister of Defense, Gen. Asadullah Khalid said that the unit is called “Rangers” which would be active under the command of corps in each zone of the country.
“Rangers would be provided with enhancive-military equipment and that it would be capable of more strength than the rest of the ANA.”
Khalid stated that the Afghan security forces were able to independently defend the country against its enemies.
He provided details about the defensive intelligence, saying that currently 60 percent of the country’s territory is under the supervision of surveillance drones and that the ministry is paying all-out efforts to extend the surveillance to the rest of the areas until next year.
He highlighted that the ANA has cleared nine districts from the Taliban in one year. According to Khalid, 700 prisoners including military and civilian personnel were freed from the Taliban’s custody by the Afghan security forces who also inflicted heavy casualties on the militants.
It is pertained to mention that around two years ago the defense ministry established the Afghan National Army – Territorial Force or so called ANA-TF to beef up security. The establishment of the new ANA force “Rangers” is another step toward progress and strengthening of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in the country.
