KABUL: The new U.S defense secretary arrived on Saturday in Kabul on an unannounced visit to meet Afghan officials and foreign troops, the US department of defense said.
The US defense department twitted that Pentagon’s new chief Ash Carter had arrived in Kabul early today morning. Carter was welcomed by Gen. John F. Campbel, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) general at Kabul airport.
US media reported that Carter would meet President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah and other officials during his visit.
He would also meet with a number of US and NATO commanders and security forces.
Carter replaced Chuck Hagel as new Pentagon chief last Thursday. Carter has served as deputy defense secretary for US and travelling to Afghanistan on his first visit after taking the office.
