KABUL: A post-vote rift between Afghanistan’s political rivals is slowly nearing an end, but with no breakthroughs yet.
Mediation between president Ghani and his rival Abdullah over another potential power-sharing deal is holding a slender but propitious promise of rapprochement between the two squabbling leaders.
Former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah is finalizing his plan – according to his aide –which seeks to provide a panacea to the ongoing political turmoil in Afghanistan.
“We are adamantly working on the plan and will finalize in coming few days,” said Abdullah camp’s spokesman Fraidoon Khozon. “No breakthrough has taken place so far. But, consultations are continuing between the leaders. Once the plan is prepared, it would set forth for mediation,” he said.
Speculations have abounded in recent days suggesting that Abdullah Abdullah may be contemplating accepting president Ghani’s offer to lead the Supreme Peace Council – a seat with benevolence of much authority.
