AT-KABUL: Two notorious shadow governors of militant Taliban in tumultuous northern and southern regions of Afghanistan have been killed along with more than 110 of their insurgent fighters in military offensives by Afghan security forces, defense authorities said Tuesday; a day after rebels ambushed a security convoy in the north and destroyed several military vehicles.

Taliban’s shadow governor for southwestern Badghis province was killed along with 60 of his fighters during aerial and ground offensives in Faryab’s Ghormach district, the interior ministry said.

This comes in the wake of a Taliban ambush on a military convoy of Afghan security forces on Monday in Ghormach district.

According to the interior ministry, the raids left 11 Taliban commanders including deputy governor of Taliban for Badghis killed. They entered Faryab from Badghis province and were purportedly behind the attack on Chinese camp in the district. Some weapons and ammunitions belonging to the group were destroyed during the clashes.

Killing of Taliban governors and tens of their fighters will help curb insurgent movements in Faryab and Badghis provinces, the ministry said.

While confirming the killing of militant shadow governor along with 60 militants, Military Corps Spokesman Hanif Rezaee said the group had abetted militants who ambushed the army convoy in Ghormach on Monday. He said, however, insurgents were pounded by ground and air offensives in the following hours and sustained heavy casualties.

Rezaee also confirmed that Taliban’s shadow district chief of Qaisar, known as Mullah Shringul, was killed along with 50 of his fighters in an airstrike in Faryab on Monday night. He said the aerial raid had targeted Shringul’s guesthouse, killing the commander and tens of his loyalists. Two vehicles belonging to the Taliban were also destroyed in the airstrike, he underlined.
