KABUL – Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, has expressed strong disapproval of NATO and the US alliance for abandoning Afghanistan and refusing to offer humanitarian assistance to millions of underprivileged Afghans.
Drawing a parallel between Afghanistan’s strategic significance in 2021 and Ukraine’s situation this year, Egeland took to Twitter, stating, “NATO countries poured trillions into their military campaign in Afghanistan until their departure from the nation two years ago. Presently, they’re not even providing adequate funding for food aid to the malnourished children left behind in 2021.”
“The most significant narrative of our era extends beyond the relentless coverage of US domestic politics. It is the often-overlooked reality that food aid has been curtailed for millions of children, spanning Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan, and the Rohingya, due to the depletion of aid funding,” he tweeted.
Egeland’s critique coincides with a dire situation where UN agencies, serving as the primary aid providers, are grappling with severe financial shortages in Afghanistan. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recently disclosed that only 25% of its requested budget for delivering aid to Afghanistan has been secured.
Additionally, the World Food Programme has scaled back its aid operations in Afghanistan due to financial constraints.
