KABUL – The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has sounded the alarm, revealing that 12.4 million Afghans are now suffering from “severe” levels of food insecurity. According to its latest report, millions are struggling with the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from, as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
The WFP has urgently called for an additional $617 million in funding to deliver critical aid packages before December 2024. However, the ongoing financial crisis, exacerbated by the Taliban’s return to power, has severely impacted the agency’s ability to provide assistance. Currently, only one million people can be supported by available resources, leaving over 11 million others without access to vital food aid.
With malnutrition rates on the rise, 1.4 million children and nursing mothers will also miss out on receiving specially fortified food due to the lack of funding. The WFP further warned that climate-related disasters are compounding the crisis, threatening the stability of already vulnerable communities across Afghanistan.
