KABUL – In Khost province, Afghanistan, more than ten individuals were publicly subjected to corporal punishment, the Taliban’s Supreme Court announced recently.
According to a press release on Thursday, May 30, each person received 39 lashes for various accusations, including theft and so-called moral corruption. Additionally, six of the individuals were sentenced to three years in prison, while another six received 15-month prison sentences.
Over the past two days, similar punishments have been carried out on 15 people in the provinces of Khost, Ghazni, and Kunduz.
Last month, the Supreme Court’s spokesperson reported that over 40 people across various cities in Afghanistan had been punished for various charges.
Since regaining power, the Taliban have regularly conducted public corporal punishments, including flogging and executions, amid a severe humanitarian crisis and widespread poverty. The situation has been further aggravated by the mass expulsion of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan, worsening the already critical conditions in the country.
