AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif is expected to visit Kabul soon in order to hold talks with the Afghan officials re resumption of second round of peace talks with the Taliban.
Pakistani media reported that Gen. Sharif would be accompanied by a high-level delegation in his visit to Kabul.
Reports suggested that date for the second phase of peace talks would be fixed after the visit of Sharif to Kabul.
The first round of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban took place in Islamabad’s tourist area Murree in July, but mired soon after the Taliban confirmed the death of their prolonged leader, Mohammad Omar.
The Herat of Asia conference, recently held in Islamabad, ended with calls for the resumption of Afghan peace talks. The conference was attended by Afghan, Pakistani, US and Chinese officials where they agreed to start the second round of talks.
It seems the US and China is coming to the fore to support Kabul and Islamabad to end the Afghan war through dialogues.
President Ashraf Ghani and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after meeting on the sidelines of a Climate Change Conference in Paris agreed to work together to revive the stalled peace talks with the Taliban insurgents.
