KABUL – A court in Pakistan has decided to suspend the corruption conviction of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. The court has also granted him bail, allowing for his release.
The case revolves around Khan’s alleged failure to disclose assets generated from the sale of state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. However, another court has ruled that Khan will remain in detention in the “cypher case.”
This case is linked to the exposure of a confidential diplomatic cable, which Khan claims supports his assertion that the United States collaborated in his removal from power the previous year. Khan is scheduled to make an appearance in a specially established court under the Official Secrets Act. This court is handling proceedings related to the cypher case.
Earlier today, the court issued an order to continue Khan’s detention and instructed relevant authorities to present him on Wednesday. According to the order, the former prime minister is a subject of investigation in a case involving a missing diplomatic cable. Despite these legal developments, analysts assert that Khan’s disqualification from participating in electoral politics remains unchanged.
The uncertainty surrounding Khan’s political future, including his eligibility to contest Pakistan’s upcoming general election, hinges on the forthcoming comprehensive court ruling, legal experts have suggested.
