KABUL – Pakistan is signaling a shift in its approach toward Afghanistan by delaying the appointment of a new special envoy for the Taliban-led government, according to a report by The Express Tribune.
It has been over six weeks since former envoy Asif Durrani was dismissed without a successor named, a move that experts suggest points to Islamabad’s changing strategy. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry reportedly believes it can manage Afghan affairs without a dedicated envoy, even as tensions with the Taliban grow.
The dismissal of Durrani, whose limited influence in Kabul drew criticism, reflects Pakistan’s strained relationship with the Taliban, particularly in light of escalating terrorist activity and accusations that the Taliban harbor militants from Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistan’s government has expressed frustration over the Taliban’s reluctance to act against the TTP, while signaling a broader reduction in diplomatic engagement.
Islamabad now appears to be prioritizing domestic security over its traditional ties with the Taliban, marking a notable policy shift.
