AT Monitoring Desk-KANDAHAR CITY: Top security official of the southern Kandahar province blames neighboring Pakistan for supporting Taliban insurgents. The provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq said Friday that Pakistan was previously providing only money and explosives to the insurgents, “but now, they also give heavy weapons to the Afghan militants.”
He warned that the Taliban insurgents would increase their spring offensives, adding that the group’s financial resources had been also enhanced.
“Police have taken security measures in many areas of the province and would also station new units of security forces in different areas,” Pajhwok Afghan News quoted Gen. Raziq as saying.
In response to a question, he said that the target killings had increased in the winter season.
Regarding the insider attacks in police, he said that there were five such incidents occurred last year in Maiwand, Shah Wali Kot and Khakrez districts of Kandahar province.
“After capturing areas in other provinces, Taliban militants would take hostage the family members of the policemen who would perform duties in Kandahar. The policemen would be then obliged to kill their comrades or handover weapons to insurgents,” he was quoted by Pajhwok as saying.
Most of the policemen who killed their colleagues were from Helmand, Baghlan and Badghis provinces, he said.
Hinting to the growing insecurity, Raziq said that the government was engaged in peace and reconciliation process, while the insurgents had intensified their attacks at the time of reconciliation.
“It is true that Pakistan made some of Taliban to commence peace talks, but it controlled others to continue war in Afghanistan, so the current peace talks are only waste of time,” source quoted Gen. Raziq, as saying.
