Kabul: Pakistan’s military reported Wednesday that its recent counterterrorism operations targeting an uptick in terrorist attacks from Afghanistan have resulted in nearly 30 “terrorists” being killed over the past month.
This statement came a day after a U.S. research group released a report stating that “Afghanistan has become a breeding ground for terrorist activities” since 2021.
Detailing its ongoing operations, the Pakistani military emphasized its focus on the border regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. It noted that one operation last week also resulted in the death of an army major.
“Recently, Pakistan has experienced a rise in terrorist incidents originating from Afghan soil, where terrorists attempt to infiltrate through the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, targeting security forces and civilians,” the statement read.
The Taliban have previously denied such allegations, asserting that they do not permit Afghan territory to be used for threats against neighboring countries.
Pakistan claims that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a designated global terrorist group, and its militants are using sanctuaries in Afghanistan to launch deadly cross-border attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians.
The Washington-based Center for a New American Security released a report on Tuesday, highlighting that the TTP and other militant groups are active in Afghanistan.
The report warned of escalating terrorist threats from Afghanistan, particularly from the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), which poses a significant international threat.
On May 10, the United States and Pakistan held a bilateral counterterrorism dialogue, agreeing to intensify collaboration against the TTP and IS-K. A joint statement highlighted the importance of this partnership in enhancing regional security and addressing transnational terrorism threats.
