KABUL: Afghan police have detained the Taliban mastermind of a rocket attack on presidential palace during Eid al-Adha congregational prayers, officials said on Sunday.
The man behind a failed terror bid to attack the presidential palace last week was arrested in a raid in Kabul. “A police special unit during an onslaught in 5th police district caught the suspect along with his three abettors,” said spokesman to the Ministry of Interior Mirwais Stanikzai.
Three rockets landed near the presidential palace as President Ghani and other high-ranking officials were standing for outdoor Eid al-Adha prayers on Tuesday last week. No injuries were reported and the rockets landed outside the palace grounds, said Stanikzai.
The police have arrested Momen, who is believed to have architected the attack on presidential palace and dozens of target killings and terrorist activities in Paghman district, he added. They have also confiscated two mobile phones and some documents from his possession.
The Eid attack coalesced with Taliban offensive that threatens to encroach on the cities as foreign forces are rapidly withdrawing. Although no major attacks were reported during Eid days, but the Taliban did not declare a ceasefire during the Eid holiday this year unlike the previous years.
