KABUL: The parliament’s lower house has not yet announced stance to agree or disagree the call of Loya Jirga that was announced by government to decide about the fate of 400 Taliban prisoners it is not ready to release.
Assadullah Shahbaz, a member of the parliament said Monday that they would announce their stance as soon as on Tuesday.
“The parliament will hold meeting to announce stance in this regard as the President said to call the Loya Jirga for the fate of 400 Taliban prisoners. Why didn’t the government call the Jirga in releasing of 5,000 Taliban prisoners?” he said.
President Ghani said last week to call Loya Jirga to decide about the release of 400 “dangerous” imprisoned insurgents.These 400 inmates are suspected for big crimes.
Shahbaz said that the people who attended last year’s Loya Jirga, would be called this time too because they are in relations with the government.
Lawyers believe that the government has legal rights to call the Jirga to decide on the fate of Taliban prisoners.
“The President has to obey the constitution, thus he could not decide about this matter just in consultation with the parliamentarians. The Loya Jirga is a stronger legal body and can legally justify the release of Taliban prisoners,” said Kabir Ranjbar, a lawyer.
More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the Loya Jirga from 34 provinces.
