AT-KABUL: After a vote in the parliament on Sunday, Humayun Humayun was elected as the first deputy speaker of the Lower House of the parliament, but another election is in the offing for the designation of second speaker and secretary of the lower house. A day earlier, the lower house had failed to elect its first deputy speaker and postponed the vote to another session.

“Humayoun Humayoun has secured 110 votes and is thereby elected as first deputy speaker of parliament,” said house speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi. Ibrahimi also said that votes to elect the house’s second speaker and secretary were postponed for a third round, as the minimum ballots were not met.

Just hours after being elected, Humayoun Humayoun on Sunday warned that government was meddling in parliamentary affairs. He also said the government was mobilized against him.

But Humayoun’s rival candidate Ahmadzai, after losing vote, came out in support of government and warned that he will not allow anyone to speak out against President Ashraf Ghani.

After 45 days winter recess, the Wolesi Jirga restarted its work last week and run election to elect its Deputy Speakers and Secretaries. This is third year that the parliamentarian election delayed due to some political and technical challenges. Although the electoral bodies as well as government earlier announced to run the parliamentarian and provincial council election this year, but still people see in doubt to the government pledges regarding running of parliamentary election in coming year.
