Peace Council optimistic to Af-Pak clerics’ meeting

AT-KABUL: The High Peace Council is optimistic that the session between Afghan and Pakistani religious scholars would give a positive result.

After many meetings by the Afghan clerics in Afghanistan, Indonesia and Saudi Arabai over the current war and seeking peace ways, a number of the clerics along with members of the peace council left for Pakistan to hold talks with the religious scholars of the country and encourage them to forbid the war.

The council’s deputy chairman, Ata Rahman Salim said Tuesday that they hoped Pakistan would cooperate honestly with this time with Afghanistan.

“We shared our position with the Pakistani clerics and we hope that there be changes in every sectors. You know what was Pakistan’s position regarding the war in Afghanistan and whom they used to propagate for. But, now the situation has improved and we expect more improvement,” said Salim, who had chaired the Afghan delegation.

He added that the meeting was held due to an official invitation by the Pakistani clerics and they met with several of eminent Pakistani ulema.

The high peace council had earlier said that the peace talks with Taliban would be also discussed in this visit, with Mohammad Amin Waqad, a council member saying that Pakistani was under increasing world pressures and needs to realize that supporting terrorism was not the resolve, and it should honestly support Afghan peace process.

Islamabad’s dual policy on Afghanistan, supporting of Taliban and calling the current Afghan war as jihad, are called as issues causing the continuation of war.

Political analysts say that religious were dependent to its government and army policies. “I think this will be hard to expect from these meetings. Religious scholars can do nothing to help Afghans solve their problems unless Pakistan’s government does not bring changes in its policy,” said Hekmatollah Azimi, head of the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR).
