KABUL: Former Member of Parliament, prominent women’s rights advocate and current member of Afghan peace team tasked to carry negotiation with the Taliban, Fawzia Koofi has sustained injures after unknown armed men attacked her vehicle in Kabul on Friday evening.
Chief of Negotiation Team, Mohammad Masoom Stanikzai confirmed assassination attempt on Koofi.
“Koofi’s vehicle came under unknown gunmen attack in Qarabagh area on the Parwan-Kabul highway Friday evening and she sustained minor injuries,” he said.
She is in a good condition and the security forces lunched investigation on the incident, he added.
The attack, which described as an assassination attempt on Koofi, has widely condemned by Afghan president and other senior politicians involved in the peace process. Foreign diplomats, including NATO, European Council, and the Australia embassy in Kabul, condemned attack on her.
President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack on Koofi, insisting cowardly attack on women activists, won’t deter them from purposeful attempts in protecting the 19 years values and achievements of Afghanistan.
Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in a tweet said; “I strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Ms. Fawzia Koofi and call upon the government to identify and apprehend the culprits and possible motive for the attack.
Worrying reports of an attack on Koofi. “We wish her well for a fast recovery,” Australian Embassy in Kabul said in a tweet.
While condemning attack on Koofi, the European Union in Afghanistan said, “Spoilers must be confronted and held accountable.”
NATO Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan, Stefano Pontecorvo in a tweet said, “Attack on Koofi is yet another despicable attempt at silencing voices of those who advocate for peace and equal opportunities.”
“The perpetrators must be brought to justice. NATO will continue to support the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in the fight against terrorism,” he added.
