KABUL: Residents in the western province of Farah say they do not have access to healthy drinkable water since the weather has got warm. They are worried that unhealthy water reserves could cause the Corona virus outbreak.
Farah lies in a hot wide desert area at the border of Iran, where a few rivers flow by seasonal rainfalls provide water to the residents.
“The government unfortunately failed in the past 18 years to provide healthy drinkable water to our villages,” Mohammad Younos, a resident of the Posht Rod district said Monday.
“People need healthy potable water via a standard canalization. A water-supply network should be built, but nothing was done in our areas,” said Javid, a resident of the Khak-e-Safid district.
Mohammad Yaqoob Maftoon, a civil society activist in Farah says that lack of healthy water had caused the outbreak of different diseases. He called for the resolve of the problem by the government.
“We ask government to pay attention to the remote areas. Most of people do not have access to potable water in the districts and have to use polluted water reservoirs,” Maftoon says.
Dadollah Qani, member of provincial council also blames central government for the problem.
“The local and central authorities pay no attention to people in Farah’s remote districts, for example; lack of healthy drinkable water,” Qani said.
Mohammad Afzal Rasouli, head of provincial water-supply department said that areas in the provincial capital are covered by the water-supply, but they did not have programs to extend the network to the districts.
“Six police districts in Farah city are completely under our coverage. But we do not have programs to expand it to the districts at present. In the future, we will expand it to remote areas too.”
About 63 per cent of people in Afghanistan have access to drinkable water, according to the statistic reports. It says that 60 per cent of potable water reserves are polluted.
