AT-KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani has urged people to push the Taliban into acceding peace talks. Visiting eastern province of Paktia’s Gardez on Sunday, Ghani said the peace proposition he unraveled a month ago was an exceedingly effective plan for achieving a lasting peace. However, Taliban have not responded to the peace talks proposal.

Ghani’s remarks come after dozens of Afghans set up tents in Helmand demanding ceasefire after a car bomb killed more than 20 outside a sports stadium in the provincial capital Lashkargah. They even held a hunger strike following which several people were hospitalized.

Commenting on parliamentary elections scheduled for October 20, Ghani emphasized on transparency of the vote and urged people to take part in it. During the visit, Ghani inaugurated Arghande-Gardez power line which is set to generate 220 KV power and Gardez sub-station generating 220 KV electricity.

He laid foundation stone of new complex for Paktia police headquarter. Map of an industrial township was also signed between Urban Development Ministry and Chamber of Commerce during the visit.
