Police “martyred” in Torkham fresh clash

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: One police and two children were “martyred” Tuesday when clash resumed between Afghan border police and Pakistan military in the Torkham crossing, officials said.

Clash began while Pakistani forces struggled to build fence in the Afghan soil on Sunday.

The clash resumed Monday and continued for three hours, which as result one border police and two children were “martyred” and 12 other border police were wounded, said Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for Nangarhar provincial governor, where the crossing lies.

He said that currently clash is stopped in the area, but shops and gate are closed.

Pakistan ambassador to Kabul was summoned by the foreign ministry to explain the reason of the clashes.

Deputy minister Nasir Ahmad Andisha gave ambassador Syed Abrar Hussain an objection note, telling him the concerns of the Afghanistan about the firing and installation of the gate in Torkham.

Also there is report that one major officer of Pakistan was killed and 11 others including civilian and Pakistan military were wounded in Torkham clash

Ministry of Defense Spokesman General Dawlat Waziri on Monday said that Afghan army is ready to defend from Afghan territory and borders bravely and repel any border attacks.

Andisha told Hussain that agreements had been reached as a result of discussions according to the international norms for establishing installations at Torkham. Nonetheless, last evening Pakistan attempted to build installations at Torkham against those agreements, and Pakistani border troops opened fire at Afghan Security and Defense Forces.

“Afghanistan’s National Security and Defense Forces retaliated in order to protect their territorial integrity and defend their people,” said the deputy minister.

It was also mentioned to Pakistani side that Afghanistan adheres to the prior agreement with this country and insists on peaceful means and expects Pakistani side to settle the problem through diplomatic channels.

According to reports, one Pakistani major officer was killed and 12 others including Pakistan military force and civilian were wounded in the Torkham incident.
