Politician in boots; MoI reiterates to eliminate militants of all hues

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: The interior minister Noorul Haq Ulomi on Tuesday said that the government would not allow any militant group to challenge writ of the government and destabilize the country.

In a joint press conference with the chief of army staff Gen. Qadam Shah Shaheem, the minister said that the National Unity Government (NUG) recognizes only the Afghan National Army (ANA), Afghan National Police (ANP) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS) as official security forces of the country and would not allow other groups to take up arms.

He said that no militant group would be allowed to work for others, adding that “irresponsible statement” about Afghan security forces would weaken morale of troops.

The minister furthered that Afghan security forces are bravely fighting against Daesh in Nangarhar and other parts of the country. “Security forces have killed 480 Daesh fighters with support of locals. Anyone who claims that security agencies are supporting militant groups could provide the evidence to the government to prosecute them,” he said.

On Monday the first deputy speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, Abdul Zahir Qadeer, alleged the National Security Council of supporting Daesh. The deputy speaker said that he had launched operation against Daesh but was stopped. Analysts have criticized the government for allowing an MP to launch operations against militants while bypassing the security agencies. They said that politicians should not wear boots as it was job of the security personnel to fight insurgents. The interior minister’s statement was a response to the allegations leveled against the security agencies by the Wolesi Jirga’s first deputy speaker.

Ulomi said that the Afghan security forces would continue the operations in restive provinces of the country, even in the winter.

Chief of the NDS, Rahmatullah Nabil, said that many regional and international terrorist groups including Daesh entered into Afghanistan after Pakistan launched operations against militants in tribal areas.

He said that more than 460 key members of Daesh were killed while tens of others were arrested, adding the Afghan security forces are preparing for the future operations and need support instead of criticism and baseless allegations.

Gen. Qadam Shah Shaheem said that irresponsible and baseless allegations would weaken the morale of the government forces.

Not naming any particular spy agency, he said the intelligence agency of the region carried out operations to take over the control of many parts of Afghanistan but faced resistance as the Afghan security forces were ready to foil such attempts.
