KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani’s special envoy Umer Daudzai met with head of Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami party Siraj-ul-Haq in Islamabad on Thursday during his four-day visit to discuss Kabul-Taliban peace process.
The Afghan envoy and the Pakistani religious scholar discussed all possible and practical ways to help in achieving peace in Afghanistan, the High Peace Council said on Friday.
Daudzai is holding talks with Pakistani officials as well as political and religious leaders as part of Ghani’s efforts to jump-start direct talks with the Taliban in bid to end the grilling war.
According to a council’s statement, Daudzai asked Siraj-ul-Haq to cooperate for the start of direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
The Pakistani religious leader vowed to cooperate with the Afghan peace process, the statement said.
On Thursday, Daudzai met with Pakistan Foreign Minister where they two sides discussed the Afghan peace process and strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
He also met with chairman of Qaumi Watan Party Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao. The two sides stressed the need for cooperation on peace between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the HPC said in a statement.
Ghani’s special peace envoy held a meeting with head of Awami National Party Asfandyar Wali Khan, where they discussed the Afghan peace process, regional situation and Pakistan’s role in the peace process.
