AT-KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani met foreign minister of Russia Sergei Lavrov, Tuesday afternoon on the sidelines of the Tashkent Conference, where both sides shed lights over important issues.

The two sides talked over the successful convening of the Kabul Process, the peace process and the Tashkent Conference on Afghanistan, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

President Ghani thanked minister Lavrov and his delegation for attending the Tashkent Conference and supporting the Afghan-led peace process. He said that regional cooperation and coordination is in the interests of all countries, evincing Afghanistan’s keenness to strengthen its economic ties with Russia particularly through exporting Afghan fruit and vegetables to Russia.

Minister Lavrov supported the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process, underscoring that Russia seeks to achieve stability and boost economic cooperation among countries in the region. He proposed holding a trilateral meeting between Afghanistan, Russia and the United States.

President Ghani welcomed Minister Lavrov’s proposal for convening a trilateral meeting and suggested the meeting be held through the prescribed channel.
