AT-KABUL: Thousands of residents of northern Balkh province took to streets to demand release of 31 passengers, who have been picked from southern Zabul province.
The protestors said that the government of national unity has failed to ensure security of Afghan masses. They urged the masked militants to release the 31 kidnapped passengers as soon as possible.
A group of armed militants stopped two vehicles on Kabul-Kandahar highway in Shahjoi district of Zabul province and kidnapped 31 passengers of Hazara ethnicity.
The protest was organized by the National Movement of Justice and Freedom in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital city of Balkh province. The protestors gathered in front of Ariana Hotel and marched towards the Balkh Provincial Council.
The protestors were chanting the slogans of “we want justice” and “release 31 passengers”. They urged the incumbent government to spare no efforts to ensure security of highways.
The protestors also issued a resolution, where they demanded the government to ensure safety of Afghan masses and exert its utmost efforts to ensure safe release of the 31 passengers.
It is worth mentioning that around five cases of kidnapping have occurred on highways over the past two months.
