KABUL – In a joint press conference in Moscow, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the critical need for peace and stability in Afghanistan. The two leaders met to discuss a broad range of regional issues, with a particular focus on Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Caucasus.
During the meeting, Pezeshkian emphasized that the stability of Afghanistan is paramount for regional security, noting that both Iran and Russia share a vested interest in maintaining peace in the country. “We exchanged views on a range of regional issues, including the Middle East and the Caucasus, and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in Afghanistan,” Pezeshkian remarked at the press conference.
The Iranian president, who had recently visited Tajikistan, revealed that cooperation in the South Caucasus, Syria, and broader Middle Eastern dynamics was also discussed in his talks with Putin.
Iran and Russia have been key allies of Afghanistan’s Islamic Emirate for over three years, with high-level visits taking place between the two countries and Afghan officials. The caretaker government of Afghanistan has continually underscored the positive role of these bilateral ties, describing them as vital for regional cooperation and security.
Hamdullah Fitrat, Deputy Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, remarked: “Afghanistan has strong relations with both Russia and Iran. Strengthening these ties will contribute to regional stability, and Afghanistan’s security is crucial for all nations involved.”
Earlier, during a meeting with Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe, Pezeshkian had similarly emphasized the importance of Afghanistan’s situation and border security, illustrating Iran’s commitment to supporting peace and regional cooperation.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the collaboration between Iran, Russia, and Afghanistan remains a cornerstone for promoting stability in the volatile region.
