Qatar Calls for Global Action to Support Afghanistan

KABUL – Qatar has called on the international community to mobilize financial and technical resources to expand humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for lasting peace and sustainable development to improve the lives of the Afghan people. The appeal was made during the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, where Qatar reiterated its commitment to supporting Afghanistan through mediation, humanitarian aid, and development initiatives.

In a statement delivered by Mishal Al Mansouri, Third Secretary at the Human Rights Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Qatar highlighted its ongoing efforts as an effective international partner. These efforts include hosting three meetings of special envoys on Afghanistan under UN auspices, fostering international consensus on critical issues, and providing humanitarian and developmental support to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people.

Al Mansouri underscored Qatar’s focus on integrating human rights issues into discussions, particularly supporting Afghan women’s participation in peacebuilding and ensuring their rights to education and equal employment opportunities. He highlighted Qatar Fund for Development’s (QFFD) Women in Conflict Zones initiative, which includes a December 2023 agreement to support Afghan weavers and craftspeople, aiming to empower women economically and help them withstand crises.

Additionally, Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia in October 2024 to provide scholarships for Afghan students to study in Indonesia, enabling young Afghans to build a brighter future.

Qatar’s statement emphasized that achieving stability in Afghanistan requires a collective global effort, urging the international community to step up its support to ensure a decent life for the Afghan people.
